At least four firefighters have been injured over the last week while battling three wildfires in Northern California forests that are burning amid extreme heat in steep, bone-dry terrain, fire officials said Monday.

The Cram fire is the largest in the state, expanding overnight to more than 64,000 acres, according to the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center. It is zero percent contained, while the Elk fire in Klamath is 39% contained and has burned around 2,700 acres.

The soil surface temperature in areas around Greek capital Athens rose in some places by as much as 10 degrees Celsius since July 2024 after big fires destroyed vegetation, research released on Wednesday by the Athens National Observatory said.

"Several other wildfires are still active in Colorado, including the Sowbelly Fire in the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area, the South Rim Fire in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and wildfires in Mesa County," the outlet reported.
