General manager Brian Cashman said last week he planned to shop for a starting pitcher before the July 31 trade deadline. That was before a blister popped up on Max Fried’s left index finger, throwing into jeopardy his first start after the All-Star break. Simply put: The Yankees need rotation help.

He acknowledged being at the mercy of how deep the pool of available players will be and that he does not know that scope fully yet. But Cashman has been in this job since 1998, and usually — though not 100 percent — when he has a contender, he makes multiple trades before the deadline.
