Sir Keir Starmer has been criticised for meeting China’s president Xi Jinping just hours before 45 Hong Kong pro-democracy activists were sentenced for attempting to field opposition candidates in an election.

What the prime minister really wants is more trade with China, to boost economic growth at home. He repeatedly notes that China is the second biggest economy in the world and one of the UK’s biggest trading partners.
