The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, which is expected to be more active than usual, has so far produced three named storms. The latest, Tropical Storm Chantal, impacted the Carolinas and the mid-Atlantic states of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
When classifying these storms, the major factor taken into account is the wind. Tropical depressions have winds of less than 38 mph; tropical storms have winds of 39 - 73 mph.

Multiple factors both in the atmosphere and ocean determine whether a tropical storm or hurricane will gain strength, hold steady or weaken throughout its journey.
Tropical cyclones typically drop large amounts of rain along and near the storm's path. The slower and more significant the storm’s size, the higher the likelihood of higher rainfall totals. Some storms can drop well over 30 inches of rainfall, like when Hurricane Harvey dropped over 60 inches near Nederland, Texas, in 2017.
So... the greatest threat looks to be heavy rain across parts of Florida & the Gulf Coast as well as a heightened rip current risk for the west coast of Florida & Panhandle & points west. If the disturbance trends more west, there will be an increased concern for impacts on water-logged Texas.

Forecasters are warning of early signs of a potential tropical cyclone developing along the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. A low-pressure system that could bring storms to Florida before moving west has a medium chance of developing into a tropical cyclone over the next several days, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
