Heavy rains during the evening brought flooding, road closures and power outages throughout New Jersey, which is under a state of emergency.

Gov. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency for New Jersey as considerable rain fell on July 14 with more expected as the night progresses.

Parts of New Jersey are getting pelted by strong thunderstorms with heavy downpours, small hail and gusty winds, prompting the National Weather Service to issue severe thunderstorm warnings and flash flood warnings in several counties Tuesday.

The heaviest rainfall and the most widespread thunderstorms are expected to develop from Northern Virginia through southern New England in the afternoon. The Weather Prediction Center has issued a “moderate” (Level 3 out of 4) risk for flash flooding in that corridor through Tuesday morning.
